Each lamp is unique. Many of the pieces have been created from wharf timber, reclaimed and recycled following restoration work on the Petone and Eastbourne wharves in Wellington Harbour. The timber is Australian Jarrah, imported and used along with other Australian hardwoods in late nineteenth century New Zealand for commercial and industrial construction.
Other pieces are crafted from jarrah telegraph poles and beautiful totara fence posts. Each has its own history and each lamp comes with its own written story.
The history of the timber has been retained by incorporating construction elements, bolt holes and surface marks while still exposing and polishing the beautiful end grain. Natural beeswax is used to polish the wood and any ironwork.
A new addition to the series is the Edison wood planes that have been rescued from dark, dusty places of retirement and brought back to life to create functional art. These carpenters' tools reveal the history of their manufacturer - often from 17th and 18th century Europe - in the brand still clearly etched on the cutting blade.
Prices vary, starting at $165.
The look-alike vintage Edison bulb has a life of about 1500 hours. Each lamp has a long lead with an in-line switch and has been independently tagged and tested to ensure electrical safety.
They come with a felt pad on the base to protect any surface you choose to put it on.
